Natural resources are very important for a country’s economy. All of us should use them fairly. Overuse of resources can lead to severe shortages in the future. Natural resources are those substances available naturally deep inside the earth or Ocean's rock bed. Some of the very commonly used natural resources include Petroleum and Coal, which are also known as fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are obtained from the fossils or dead remains of the plants and animals Over millions of years, the dead remains are buried deep inside the rocky layers of the Earth where high pressure and temperature will compress them into blocks of coal and crude oil India is home to many natural resources. Some of them include gold, iron, steel, coal etc.

Text book excises:

1.Solve the following riddle to identify natural resources

Answer: Sun.

2.Identify the renewable and non-renewable resources in the following list: (Water, Soil, Fossil, Fuel, Air, Wind, Minerals, Solar energy, Forests)

Answer: Renewable resources are Solar energy, air, wind, water and soil. Forests, minerals and fossil fuels are non-renewable.

 3. What is solar energy? How can we use it in our daily life:

Answer:  The energy obtained from sun is called solar energy. It is useful for :

  1. Food production in the plants through photosynthesis.
  2. Solar energy is used for cooking, boiling water, light and running vehicles.

4.What are the types of natural resources

Answer:The types of natural resources are classified into exhaustible and inexhaustible resources exhaustible resources are also known as non-renewable resources and inexhaustible resources are renewable resources. We cannot reuse non-renewable sources But we can reuse a renewable resource.

5.How is petroleum formed?

Answer:  petroleum is formed by the fossil fuels .Fossil fuels are the dead remains of plants and animals that gets stuck deep inside the rocky bed of oceans. Due to the high temperature and high pressure inside the core of the earth, the dead remains will gradually turn into Petroleum.

6. Is petroleum a renewable resource??

Answer :  No, petroleum is not a renewable resource because once it is used it becomes carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide cannot be reversed.

 7. Name some renewable resources.

Answer: The most common renewable resources include soil, air, and water.

8.Do you think petroleum and petrol or same?

Answer : No, petroleum is the combination of many products. The main products obtained from petroleum are petrol, diesel, mineral oils, natural gas, liquid paraffin etc, etc. The raw material used to obtain all these is the crude oil which will heated and separated all these by-products.

9. Explain the uses of soil and forests?

Answer: Soil is the most important natural resource. To conserve thesoil: Farmers should grow more plants, as thick vegetation helps prevent soil erosion. The soil should not be polluted by using it for non – agricultural purposes. Modern methods like construction of bunds in the edges of the field will reduce soil erosion. Farmers must use techniques like contour tilling in the sloppy areas.

 10. Observe these figures and make a list of uses of forests.

Answer: Forests provide fruits, flowers, medicinal plants, wood, bamboo, honey and many other products. Forests are the shelters for tribal. Some trees prevent soil erosion by holding the soil through their roots. One of the most important benefits of trees is the release of oxygen, which is essential for all living beings. Oxygen released during photosynthesis will keep our atmosphere cool.

11.How are forests being destroyed?

Answer:  Our forests are being destroyed by various human activities like urbanization, industrialization, and the construction of houses, apartments, bridges, and roads. Many farmers are exploiting the forests by converting them into agriculture land.

 12. How can we conserve forests?

Answer:  Protection of trees by various methods is called conservation. There are many ways to conserve the forests. In first place, a strict law against unnecessary felling of trees must be imposed. Tree-planting campaigns by schools and the government can help. We must also manage forest fires as early as possible to protect trees.
