Food is the essence of life. No organisms can survive without food. All plants and animals nee it to grow, reproduce and continue their lineage. In this lesson we will be going through some important concepts related to food.

1. What do you mean by food?

Answer: Food is an eatable substance animals that gives necessary nutrients and energy for all activities and bodily processes. Food can be obtained from either plant or animal sometimes from both

2. Why do we need food?

Answer:  We need food for energy to support our body to perform daily activities such as walking, talking, lifting, writing etc

3. Classify the food materials:

Answer:  We can obtain food materials from plants and animals sources. Some common plant sources include wheat, ragi, rice, mango, cauliflower, nuts, fruits, green leaves etc.Animal sources are; milk and milk products such as ghee, curd, butter milk, eggs, chicken, mutton etc.

4. What are the two major types of nutrients?

Answer:  Two main class of nutrients are macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are required in large quantities .Macronutrients are; carbohydrates, proteins, lipids. Minerals and vitamins are micronutrients as they are required in small amounts.

5. What are autotrophs and heterotrophs?

Answer:  Autotrophs can produce their food on their own. All plants are autotrophs as they synthesize their food by photosynthesis. Animals on the other hand, cannot produce food but they fulfill their food by eating other plants and animals hence they are called heterotrophs.

6. What is balanced diet?

Answer: B balanced diet is a food that contains all the necessary nutrients in a required quantity. Some of the balanced diet includes milk, egg and meat.

7. Why do we need proteins and name some protein food sources?

Answer:  Proteins are the most essential part of our food as they help in growth of muscles and bones, hence they are called bodybuilding foods. Foods such as milk, eggs, fish, meat, pulses like green peas , urad dhal, soybean, are good source of protein.

8. What are carbohydrates? Name some food items that are rich in carbs.

Answer:  Carbohydrates are called energy yielding foods as they give us energy for all activities. Some important sources of carbohydrates are; rice, fruits, potato, sweet potato, bread, honey, wheat, etc.,

9. Classify the different types of plant foods? 

Answer:  There are various plant foods. Most common among them are cereals, nuts, pulses, fruits and vegetables.

10.What are cereals? 
Answer:  Cereals are the most common food items which makes up to 70 percent of our daily food. The grains such as rice, ragi, jowar, and wheat are the most common cereals.

11.What are pulses and name some pulses.

Answer: Pulses have single or double cotyledon in them. Some common pulses are different dals, and beans. Urad dhal, moong dhal, and toor dhal are very common

12. Why do we need lipids? Name some sources of lipids.

Answer:  Lipids are the protection foods that covers our body in the form of fat which is stored under skin, and some vital organs . The healthy sources of lipids are oil seeds like sesame groundnut, castor sunflower. Some animal lipids include ghee, meat, eggs, butter, milk and curd.

13. What are vitamins and minerals?

Answer: Vitamins and minerals are also called immune boosters as they help us in developing resistance to diseases. They are required in small quantities. Vitamins are classified into vitamin A, vitamin B vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K.

14. What are junk foods, give examples.

Answer:  Junk foods are deep fried, highly spiced foods . They taste very good but not good for health. The most common junk foods in India are the street foods such as panipuri, chips, Gobi manchurian, sweets etc,

15. Classify the food substances based on their function.

Answer:

  1. Energy giving foods (carbohydrates).
  2. Bodybuilding foods(proteins).
  3. Protective nutrients( vitamins and minerals)
