Crops

Plants of the same kind that are grown and cultivated as a source of food in a large cultivable land is called a crop. Crops may be food Crops, cash crops or commercial crops. Plants grown primarily for human use but not for making profit are called food crops examples; grains (like rice and wheat), vegetables, fruits, and legumes. Cash Crops are grown for the purpose of selling them and making profit , such as cotton, sugarcane, and tea. Additionally crops can be classified as fibre crops, pulses, cereals, legumes, fruits etc.

Types of Crops based on the season:

Kharif Crops

Examples: Rice, Maize, Millet, Cotton, Soybean

Season: June TO October (Monsoon)

Rabi Crops

Examples: Wheat, Barley, Mustard, Peas

Season: October TO March (Winter)

Steps of Farming

Farming is a process that involves several important steps to grow healthy crops and ensure good yield. The main steps in farming are:

Preparation of Soil

Preparation of soil is the first step before sowing seeds. It helps the soil become fertile, aerated, and suitable for seed sowing. The 3 important steps involved in soil preparation are:

1. Ploughing (Tilling): During this process, the soil is loosened and turned upside down using a plough. This helps in improving the movement of air deep into the soil and allows roots to penetrate deeper. For the sake of ploughing, a plough is used by the farmers for different purposes, such as adding fertilizers, tilling and loosening the soil

A. Plough is used for adding fertilizers to the soil, removing weeds, scraping of soil, etc.

B. The ploughshare is the triangular iron strip.

C. A ploughshaft is the main part of the plough, which is made using a log of wood.

E. The other end is attached to a beam which is placed on the bull’s neck.

F. A wooden, traditional plough can be operated by a pair of ox and a man.

2.Levelling: Ploughing makes soil uneven so, a leveller is used to break down large soil clumps into fine dust which helps to level the field. Levelling ensures uniform distribution of water during irrigation. It p revents soil erosion caused by wind or water and it also aids inproper seed sowingand crop growth.

3. Manuring/Adding manure

Manuring means adding natural or chemical substances (called manure or fertilizers) to the soil to make it fertile and suitable for healthy crop growth.

Purpose of Manuring:

A hoe is a tool that is used to dig up soil to remove weeds and also loosen up the soil before planting a sapling.

Cultivator

1. A cultivator is attached to the tractor and helps in loosening soil.

2. Cultivators are used instead of ploughs since they are faster.

Sowing of seeds

Sowing is the process of planting seeds in the prepared soil. It is a crucial step in farming, as the success of the crop depends on the quality and method of sowing. Proper sowing ensures that plants grow well, get enough sunlight, air, nutrients, and water, and develop into healthy crops.

Techniques of Sowing Seeds

There are several methods used to sow seeds in the field. The choice of technique depends on the type of crop, size of the field, and tools available. The main techniques are:

1. Broadcasting: Broadcast spreader Seeds are scattered by hand over the soil surface. It is simple and quick method but often leads to uneven distribution. It is suitable for small farms and grass crops.

Nursery

A nursery is a place where young plants or seedlings are grown and nurtured under controlled conditions before being transplanted to the main field. It is commonly used in agriculture and horticulture for crops that need special care during the early stages of growth.

Importance of Nursery for Farmers:

Germination of Seeds

Germination is the process by which a seed develops into a new plant under suitable conditions. It is the beginning of a plant's life cycle.

Conditions Required for Germination:

1. Water: Activates enzymes and softens the seed coat.

2. Oxygen (Air): Needed for the seed to perform respiration and produce energy.

3. Suitable Temperature: Helps in enzyme activity and proper growth of the embryo.

Stages of Germination:The seed absorbs water and swells which leads to breakage of seed coat .In the next phase a radicle (baby root) comes out first and grows downward along with the plumule (baby shoot) grows upward toward the light.

Adding Manure and Fertilisers

Manure and fertilizers are added to the soil to restore and increase its fertility , ensuring healthy growth and high yield of crops. To replenish nutrients lost from the soil after repeated crop growing. Manure increase yield a nd crop quality by the healthy development of roots, stems, and fruits.

Differences between Manure and Fertilizers

2. Water Pollution: Excess fertilizers can get washed into nearby water bodies during rain or irrigation, causing eutrophication —excessive growth of algae that harms aquatic life.

3. Harm to Soil Organisms: Useful microbes and earthworms that maintain soil health may die due to strong chemicals in fertilizers.

4. Health Hazards: Crops grown with too many fertilizers may carry harmful chemical residues, which can affect human health when consumed.

5. Dependency:Continuous use of fertilizers can make farmers dependent on them, reducing the use of organic alternatives.

6. Expensive: Chemical fertilizers are often expensive and may not be affordable for all farmers.

Irrigation

Irrigation is the process of supplying water to crops at regular intervals to help them grow properly. It is essential in areas where rainfall is insufficient or irregular. Irrigation prevents drying of soil and Increases crop yield and quality.

Common Irrigation Techniques:

1. Traditional Methods: These are simple and low-cost methods, often using human or animal power.

o Moat (Pulley system): Water is drawn from a well using a bucket.

o Chain Pump: Uses a chain to lift water.

o Dhekli: A lever system to lift water.

o Rahat: Water is drawn using animals.

2. Modern Methods: These are efficient and save water by minimizing wastage.

o Sprinkler System: Water is sprayed through pipes in the form of rain-like droplets. It is best for sandy soil and uneven land. 2soaker hose

Protecting the crops from Weeds

Weeds are unwanted plants that grow alongside crops and compete with them for nutrients, water, sunlight, and space. If not controlled, weeds can greatly reduce crop yield.

Ways to Protect Crops from Weeds:

1. Weeding (Manual Removal): Removing weeds by hand or using tools like khurpi. This method is useful for small farms and during early crop stages.

2. Tillage: Farmers Plough the field before sowing which helps to pull the weeds roots up and destroy them.

3. Using Weedicides (Chemical Control): Special chemicals like 2,4-D are sprayed to kill weeds without harming crops. It should be used in correct quantity and at the right time (usually before flowering of weeds).

4. Mulching: It is the process of covering the soil with dry leaves, straw, or plastic to block sunlight, which prevents weed growth.

5. Crop Rotation and Intercropping: Changing crops seasonally and growing multiple crops together reduces the chance of weed domination.

Harvesting

Harvesting is the process of cutting and collecting mature crops from the field when they are ready. It marks the end of the crop-growing cycle and is a very important step in farming, It is done when the grains become hard and dry and when fruits or vegetables are fully ripened .

Methods of Harvesting:

Harvesting is often followed by celebrations in different parts of India. It is called with different names in different states . For example; Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Sankranti in Karnataka , Baisakhi in Punjab And Onam in Kerala

6. Storage of Crops

After harvesting, storing crops properly is very important to protect them from pests, moisture, and spoilage. Good storage ensures that the crops remain fresh and safe for use over time. Proper storage prevents damage by insects, rats, and fungi . It helps to avoid spoilage due to moisture and maintain quality and quantity of grains. Better storage helps in selling the crops later at better prices

Methods of Storage:

1. For Small Farmers:

o Jute bags, clay pots, metal bins , or wooden boxes

o Grains are sun-dried before storing to remove moisture

2. For Large Scale Storage:

o Granaries: Large buildings used to store grains

o Silos: Tall, cylindrical structures made of metal or concrete

o Cold Storage: Used for perishable crops like fruits and vegetables to keep them fresh

Precautions during Storage:

Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is the scientific care, breeding, and management of farm animals like cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats, poultry, and fish for useful products such as milk, meat, eggs, wool, and hides. Animal husbandry provides milk, meat, eggs, wool, and leather which can provide additional income to farmersespecially in rural areas. It helps in agriculture—animals like oxen are used for ploughing. Animal husbandry supports organic farming through manure and natural fertilizers.

Types of Animal Husbandry:

1. Dairy Farming:
Rearing of animals like cows and buffaloes for milk production.

2. Poultry Farming:
Rearing of chickens, ducks, and turkeys for eggs and meat.

3. Sheep and Goat Rearing:
For meat, milk, and wool.

4. Fish Farming (Pisciculture):

(a) Preparation of soil. Preparation of soil involves two main steps-ploughing and levelling. Ploughing is the process of loosening and turning the soil so that the circulation of air is improved in the soil. It is done with the help of various types of ploughs like wooden iron for hard soil, bullock drawn, or tractor driven. Loosening of soil permits easy and deeper penetration of the roots and it provides good aeration to the roots. 1. Sprinkler system: This system is useful on uneven lands where water is available in smaller quantities. In this system, the perpendicular pipes, having rotating nozzles on the top, are joined to the main pipe at regular intervals. When the water flows through the main pipe with the help of a pump, it escapes from the rotating nozzles. It is sprinkled on the crop as if it is raining.

2. Drip system. In this system, the waterfalls drop by drop just at the position of the roots. This system consists of the main pipe to which lateral pipes are joined. The specially prepared nozzles are attached to these lateral pipes. The nozzles are grounded just near the roots of the plants. It provides water to plants drop by drop. Water is not wasted at all.

The main tools used for ploughing are plough, hoe, and cultivator.

(i) Plough. It is used for tilling of the soil, adding fertilizers to the crop, removing the weeds, and scrapping of soil. Plough is made of wood and drawn by a pair of bulls. It contains a strong triangular iron strip called plough share. Its main part is a long log of wood called a plough shaft. There is a handle on one end.
